TEACHING GRADATION THROUGH HAND WEAVING
Scenario: Weaving Room in a school in Chennai
Participants: Grade 4 students and their class teacher
Today’s lesson plan: Gradation with 2 colours
Teacher: “Children, we are going to create a gradation with 2 colours in today’s weaving class. As I explained to you in the last session, a colour gradient is a visual effect that creates a gradual blending of colours”
“In today’s weaving class, please choose 2 colours of your choice and wind the bobbins. You are going to use 2 shuttles for weaving today. You can keep the width of one colour constant and increase the width of the other colour gradually as you weave”
Student: “Teacher, can I weave 8 picks of Red, followed by 8 picks of Blue and then keep 8 Red constant and increase the Blue colour alone using the 8s table which I learnt yesterday?”
This is a glimpse of the class at Arsha Vidya Mandir school, Chennai last week, when we went to see how the children are taking up weaving.
In about half an hour, they had completed the weaving exercise.
Teacher: “Can someone tell me where you see such a gradient in the school”
Student: “I could see this in the staircase leading to the weaving room on the first floor. When I look at the stairs from the ground, the steps closer to the ground look tall; they look short as they go up”
Doesn’t it send you goosebumps?
Our ‘Brain Weaves’ program is curated for schools where weaving is linked to concepts of math, science, social sciences, music and more as elements of designing the fabric. The children learn to apply their learnings and weave beautiful fabrics; in the process, they also learn the craft of weaving- hands on!
Please contact us to discuss more about how we can take it to your child’s school.
